WAKA: More Than Just a Children's Game

Editor's Note: This week we brought in a special guest writer, Golden. He definitely is not an anonymous regular contributor to this blog. He hasn't written for it in like a year or two. Seriously. Don't ask any more questions.

Kickball is the fourth-best thing to ever happen to me. It’s only surpassed by Cam Newton, mountains, and the day I realized my girlfriend’s dog loves me more than her. My success story is hardly unique. It’s one of thousands across the country, including probably two or three dozen right here in Denver.

I'm writing this blog mostly for the new or prospective players. When your team of free agents is getting whalloped 34-0 by Globogym still kicking for the fences and arguing every ball and strike, remember this: only a fraction of what kickball has to offer is on the field.

I played my first WAKA game in Spring 2010, in the Boston-area MA Minutemen League. I joined New Kicks on the Block, an established team that always finished near the top of the standings. Heading to play under the lights on a baseball diamond in Somerville every Wednesday quickly became the highlight of my week.

We took over our sponsor bar, this little Latin dive, and a dedicated group of us always partied until they kicked us out. Sure it hurt at work the next morning, but four years later I remember those nights more vividly than any spreadsheet -- or any of the actual kickball games, for that matter. Before joining WAKA, I could count my friends in Boston on my fingers. By the time I left to move to Denver that June, only a couple months later, it took me weeks of parties and happy hours to properly say goodbye.

Starting over (again) in a new city, I joined WAKA Denver at the first opportunity. I was randomly assigned as a free agent to Balls and Dolls of the CO Mile High league in Spring 2011. While Balls and Dolls was quite possibly the worst kickball team to ever take the field, I experienced the same phenomenon as in Boston. My friend group exploded from a half-dozen people to hundreds in about two weeks. Even then, CO Mile High had its established teams and a somewhat cliquey atmosphere. I’ll let y’all in on a little secret: go to the bar. Stay at the bar. Play flip cup at the bar. You’ll feel included in no time.

Balls and Dolls: What we lacked in skill, we made up for in fun.
Flip cup is the key.
Balls and Dolls merged with, hilariously enough, the only team we beat that spring: STU GATZ (sic). As it turns out, sometimes two wrongs do make a right. STU GATZ jumped to immediate championship contention. More importantly than that, I met people who I can honestly say will be lifelong friends. The team with the annoying cheer changed its name to the correct spelling (STU GOTZ) and became known for crushing last-minute championship losses and enviable bandanas.

By 2012, playing kickball one night a week was no longer enough. I joined the second Denver league, CO Recess, as part of the PINK TACOS. Spoiler alert: those people were freakin’ awesome too. I became so enamored with kickball that I started volunteering to write for this very GMOT newsletter, back when the talented Hallie Myers was producing it in a beautiful PDF format. STU GOTZ finally won a championship. Some people retired or moved away or changed teams, but fresh faces came in too. Times were good.
The original STU GOTZ.
One of my favorite STU GOTZ teams. Runners-up.
Birth of the bandanas.
Finally champions.
How could things possibly get better? I met my girlfriend, Kate, at the Spring 2013 pre-season party. I don’t want to get too mushy or anything, but nothing will ever surpass that as the crown jewel of my kickball career.

The CO Recess coordinator, Ashley, departed for California in the middle of the Summer 2013 season. I was a natural target to take over because I'm better than her at everything, and after intense negotiations (Lydia had to buy me a whole four beers), I agreed to terms. I’d also joined a new team that season called Truffle Shuffle. (Sorry, PINK TACOS. Spanny promised I could pitch.) It was a small league and, thanks to karma from Benedict Golden, Truffle Shuffle lost to the PINK TACOS in the championship. That’s not what I take away from that season, though. Once again joining a new team was like gaining a whole new family. Along with the players on STU GOTZ and the Tacos, Truffle Shuffle became some of my best friends.
O.G. Truffle Shuffle
In Fall 2013, I was called upon to run the much larger CO Mile High league. Let’s just call that an eye-opening experience. Most players have little idea how much work goes into running a season, from recruiting teams/players to creating a schedule to planning parties/themes to resolving petty disputes week in and week out. You have the impossible job of making everyone happy. I swear, anyone who runs a WAKA season should receive some sort of honorary Psychology degree.

We’re up to recent history now. I dislocated my shoulder in September and haven’t really been able to play since, except in the Fall 2013 tournament to help Truffle Shuffle win its first championship. I had surgery in January to repair recurrent shoulder instability, and at the earliest I’ll be ready to go by summer. The safe plan would be waiting until fall. Perhaps even safer would be hanging up my cleats for good. (But screw that.)
Mmm, Grounds For Dismissal tears.
Trufflin' champs.

Kickball has given me literally hundreds of friends, several championships, an awesome dog and the girl who comes with him, and memories to last several lifetimes. So if you’re new or prospective player and wondering what this kickball thing is all about, the tl;dr version of this tale is simply that my life is infinitely richer and more fulfilling because of it. Thanks to everyone who’s played a part, and here's to many, many more good times.

An Ode to Spring Kickball

Weather that’s 70 degrees and sunny one day and blowing snow the next. Buddies coming back together after months of ski houses, sports bars, wacky fundraisers and beach vacations. New players registering, excited to meet their teams after recently relocating or deciding to expand their social circle. Fierce recruiting and the congenial trash-talk that comes along with it. Most of all, a tangible buzz, an electricity that can be felt whenever you put two kickballers in the same room.

It’s the eve of Spring kickball in the Mile High City.

The season officially begins tonight with a pre-season pickup game and Captain’s Meeting, with the first round of play scheduled for next week. Can we expect a blizzard, like last season’s epic snow-blasted Week 1? Or will players be lounging around in T-shirt sipping Coronas (in a CAN, of course)? Well, we probably won’t know that until next Wednesday morning. Touche, Colorado. What we do know is that no matter the weather, we’re in for a fine season on the turf at Infinity Park (CO Mile High) and downtown at City of Cuernavaca Park (CO Radical).

Snow Bowl: Spring 2013 CO Mile High Week 1

The defending CO Mile High Champion, Truffle Shuffle, lost their best and most handsome player to the IR and will face a new challenger in The Darkside Colorado Chapter 2.0 (Fall 2013 CO Radical Champions). The Peep Show has reloaded, and GROUNDS FOR DISMISSAL! returns in all its gangly glory after notching an Indoor Kickball title less than a week ago. Ballzagna and the Disco Ninjas are back for their second seasons after showing much improvement last fall, while a new-look CFB could surprise. Or will a new team shock the world?

Indoor Kickball Champions: Groundz For Dismissal

More of a social kickballer than a competitive kickballer? Don’t worry, you’re in the majority, and we have good news for you too! Kati Gangles has joined the WAKA staff as a social coordinator, and with the help of a seasoned party-planner freshly imported from the Albuquerque leagues, the shenanigans are going to be “turned up to 11” for 2014. Remember, if you skip out on visiting the sponsor bar after your game, you’re missing 72 percent of the fun. That’s a totally accurate, definitely not made up statistic.

The Gangly One

Speaking of the sponsor bar, if you took a break during indoor kickball, you’re soon to be introduced to The Lift. Formerly known as The Watering Bowl, it’s a huge dog-friendly establishment with projection-screen TVs for sports, two bars, games and an outdoor patio where the pups are allowed off-leash. Basically, it’s the perfect warm-weather bar for Denver. Better yet, they’re hooking us up with awesome food and drink specials.

In the spirit of the Winter Olympics...

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, IT’S KICKBALL TIME!

Still want to sign up? Registration for both the CO Mile High and CO Radical leagues remain open. Visit www.kickball.com/denver for more information, and be sure to follow our Facebook page for regular updates.

CO Mile High Week 5 Recaps

YOU’RE KILLING ME BALLS!
Tensions were high as the YKMB/Pink Street Hustlers took the field against the Undefeated and Golden-less Truffle Shuffle. The balls came out swinging in the first inning, scoring 4 runs.
And were swiftly returned 4 runs by the truffles. The crowd of at least 7, but in no event more than 15, looked on as the Balls dug from deepest recesses of their Bud Light case for kicking inspiration. They held the truffles to no more runs and tacked on 3 more to the scoreboard (aka peeps mark's legal pad). And the gods look upon the Balls and their WIN, and its was good. As for their rumble against pretty boy Floyd, all that mattered was that the beer finally arrived.

PRETTY BOY FLOYD
6-0 Still UNDEFEATED... INCHUGGINGWHICHISTHEMOSTIMPORTANTTHINGABOUTKICKBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In other news, we lost both games.

It has been noted we have either the most incredible pop fly catches or the worst possible pop fly drops... It is through this task that our fate will be decided!

Until next week!!!

TRUFFLE SHUFFLE
The Boys in Blue resembled an ER trauma ward during Week 5, with three of their eight handsome gentlemen sitting out with an injury. Tory hurt his ankle while tickle-fighting a local high school girls’ soccer team, Golden dislocated his shoulder saving a baby from a burning building and Rob suffered from internal bleeding as a result of overdosing on estrogen pills. You’re Killing Me Balls took advantage and delivered a solid whipping. It could have been much worse without the stellar defensive play of Kelly “Black Hole” Reese, who caught an estimated 87 line drives and made 9 outs at 2B in one inning alone. With Golden and Rob remaining on IR for at least another week and Tory listed as Questionable, the long-anticipated showdown with The Peep Show will be a challenge.

COMING FROM BEHIND
CFB played against pretty boy Floyd. Damn good game! What a week in standings shakeups!! Wow! However we play kickball for the fun of it, with friends and new faces. And to geeeeetttttt drunk. That's the unnecessary sexiness.

Hot Shotz of the Week - Josue Mendoze & Nicole Unrein

Name: Josue Mendoza
Team: Ballzagna!!
Playing since: First year; definitely coming back next year!!
Favorite WAKA memory:
Getting sent flying over a runner as he ran towards home while I jumped up for the ball in an attempt to tag him out. The landing looked more painful than it was as I flipped over him and landed straight on my butt, but I am willing to sacrifice the body all for the sake of a good play. And at the end of the day, no hard feelings between me and him. It's all in fun.
Drink of choice:
My daily, delicious protein shake, after a tiring workout at the gym. It seriously is a huge highlight of my day. But then again, anyone that knows me, knows that anytime I feed my body is a cause for celebration.
If you were to be featured on a Magazine, which one would it be and what would be the headline?
Jet Magazine, Headline: Thats right I put this guy on the cover! Go ahead!! Fire me! I dont care!! -The Editor (Not what I would've hoped for, but at least I made the cover of a magazine.)

Name: Nicole Unrein
Team: Truffle Shuffle
Playing since: 2011
Favorite WAKA memory:
Waka cruise to Mexico-but all the things that happened on the boat, stays on the boat!
Drink of Choice:
Kickball kool-aids  (blueberry vodka & pomegranate juice) or fireball
You're the lead in the movie only once in your life; what's the title and plot synopsis?
"If I Ruled the World" & it would be me changing things to the way I like them- can you say "A" type personality?

CO Mile High - Week 4 Recaps

FLIPADELPHIA!
Pretty boy Floyd game was cool, player of the game award is split between John Young at pitcher and Mackie Marquez, for a fantastic catch at short stop.
Peep Show MVP award goes to the entire team of Peep Show, who apparently did not register in time to form a MLS team, so played kickball instead. Definitely a cool team, who stopped trying for strategy after the first inning when they were up 183 to -5.

TRUFFLE SHUFFLE
Our hats go off to the Disco Ninjas, who gave us our closest game yet. The road gets tougher from here with a few straight weeks against veteran teams, and we'll have to shuffle our way past them without Golden and possibly Rob. Everyone laugh at them for getting injured in a charity kickball tournament. As always, the Week 4 MVP award goes to The Warhawk.

BALLZAGNA
Everyone had an off day kickin', but at least EVERYONE showed up for flippin'!

GROUNDS FOR DISMISSAL
Out of the sewers and into the hearts of may ballers out there, the TEENAGE MUNTANT NINJA TURTLE kickballers came to the field with a little extra HARDSHELL to battle the GOTZ TACOS aka Your Killing Me Balls!  With so many familiar faces on the opposing team it was tough to play such great defense and capped the win with a strike out in the bottom of the 6th inning provided by Dana "Ballnadao" Donato.  TOUGHEST HARDSHELL award goes to Mike "Stop Looking at my Package" Tsang who had the hardest collision of the season running to 1st base.  Thankfully and surprisingly no injuries incurred.  Even better not a single error was made by the entire team.

If doesn't know what TMNT stands for.....it's GROUNDS FOR DISMISSAL!!!!

THE PEEP SHOW
The Peeps had two strong victories on their double header night. The first game Started off strong and didn't end. The peeps left the bunting on the beach and went for a full blown kickoff! The second game started off much the same if not a little more shakey given liquid intake and a few jello shots. A beer in hand rule was enacted and enforced by the captain late in the game which resulted in the Peeps giving up 10 runs. Overall the Peeps had a great night!

PRETTY BOY FLOYD
Chugging Coin Toss 4-0 Still UNDEFEATED!!!

In our epic battle against Flipidelphia, PBF was not victorious... We were all tied up at the bottom of the 5th but went an extra inning and came out down, 6-9. But we shall rise to fight again another day! We did have an amazing finger pop fly catch by the lovely Rhiannon and an awe inspiring home run by the studly Bill! We were also graced by the presence of the incomparable Power Puff Girls on Wedndesay's game, although Buttercup did have a tragic fall trying to tag up on second, their ferocious anime power struck fear into the hearts of our foes!

CO Mile High Week 3 Recaps

The Peep Show
The Peeps came out a little shaky in the first inning allowing the first two runners on but coming back strong with three straight outs to strand the runners. After that it was smooth sailing. Fast base running, long kicks, and amazing placement allowed the Peeps to score 5 in the first inning. From there it was textbook playing. No ESPN top 10 plays this week, just by the book defense and offense that allowed the Peeps to roll to a 10-2 victory. The one scar on the night was a homerun given up by some less than perfect pitching by the teams captain, asian mark, followed later by two walks given rise to Peep on Peep Chirping abuse that was quickly quieted by mass amounts of alcohol consumption. Overall an epic Peep Week. Chirp Chirp!

Ballzagna
The disappointing team loss this week, doesn’t stop Ballzagna from loving the kickball game and the WAKA league.

As Captains, Andrew and I were impressed with the fact that the majority of our team were able to show up and play flip cup before the 8 o'clock kickball game on Wednesday. Unfortunately, this was unlike most of the other teams, and we had no opponents… Our assumption was that this league took flip cup seriously, guess not!

When it came to the actual kickball game, our team looks better and better each week. This week we have a real sense of unity, and each player has begun to stand out as they learn their position. Due to injuries and a couple absent people this week we only had 2 subs. Jamie (who received a leg injury in week #2 and was not able to play this week) showed up to cheer on the team and play base couch, this just one example of how seriously Ballzagna takes kickball.

When it came to defense very few long kicks were not caught by our outfield. Ryan, Allison, and Paige all stood out with a couple amazing catches, but Josue looked like a Titan amongst men, as he caught ever ball that came within 30 feet of him. Josue was definitely week #3 MVP and saved our offense, he had a couple huge kicks that allowed us to get multiple players home :) I have no doubt that with some practice, our team will be a serious contender in the playoffs!

All in all, we have a dedicated kickball team! Everyone wants to do what they can to win and have fun : ) None of us can wait for next week's game!!

Truffle Shuffle
It's almost not even fair for the other teams because we have The Warhawk, Nicolette Jones. This might not be accurate, but I'm pretty sure she scored at least 11 of our runs single-handedly and then found a cure for SARS. All in a night's work for The Warhawk. Additional props go out to Forrest Mears for filling in at captain while Spanny was getting treated for hemorrhoids.
